What is business analysis?
The Business Analysis Body of Knowledge created by the International Institute of Business Analysis states that business analysis is “the practice of enabling change in an enterprise by defining the needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders”.
This definition contains a set of key terms that are crucial for the understanding of the domain of business analysis and that empower individuals to fully understand the profession and be able to deliver high-quality results. They are “change”, “needs”, “solution”, “value” and “stakeholders”.
The complete understanding of the meaning of these 5 terms leads to the ability to see the full spectrum of a business analysis professional’s responsibilities and allows them to complete the work in accordance with the high standards.
It is not about the job title such as "business analyst": you can be in charge of business analysis activities or product management, the focus is on completing the business analysis work effectively and this is something that powers success.
The definition of business analysis also allows us to see the horizons that can be covered by it: business analysis is not just about eliciting requirements in IT projects, it is about the ability to recognize and deliver value regardless of the industry and the perspective.
