Understanding the Needs

Initiating changes within an organization must always be rooted in addressing crucial needs. According to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK), needs are defined as 'problems or opportunities.'

The relationship between needs and changes is symbiotic: needs instigate stakeholders to take action, while changes can spark new needs.

One of the crucial roles of a business analyst is to uncover the authentic problems faced by clients or the opportunities that demand attention. This important step sets the stage for a comprehensive analysis and allows to come up with a solution that is capable of providing the most value to the stakeholders within the given context.

However, some stakeholders might exhibit resistance or struggle to articulate the true needs. In such cases, discussions that take place are about expressed desires and presumed solutions.

The skill level of proficient business analysts should equip them to recognize such nuances. This expertise empowers them to tread sensitively, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that encourages stakeholders to openly share their concerns. This alignment of insight and cooperation fuels effective problem-solving and innovation.
