The core content of the BABOK Guide (6 chapters out of 11) focuses on the 6 knowledge areas, which form the foundation of business analysis practices.
A knowledge area represents a specific domain of expertise within business analysis. In other words, knowledge areas logically group the tasks that business analysts perform.
There are 6 knowledge areas and 30 tasks in total. Business analysts should have a solid understanding of each knowledge area, as well as the tasks within them.
The 6 knowledge areas are:
Business Analysis Planning and Monitoring
Elicitation and Collaboration
Requirements Life Cycle Management
Strategy Analysis
Requirements Analysis and Design Definition
Solution Evaluation
Two key points about the knowledge areas and their tasks:
Knowledge areas are not sequential: They aren’t performed in a fixed order for every initiative. The sequence is determined by the business analyst based on the project context.
Task selection is context-driven: Depending on the situation, business analysts choose the most relevant knowledge areas and tasks that will deliver the most value. Not every initiative requires working through all 6 knowledge areas or completing all 30 tasks.
