Setting Expectations and Commitments In Business Analysis

When working on a new initiative, some stakeholders may be interacting with a business analyst for the first time.

They might not fully understand your role or what to expect from you. Yet, as a business analyst, your success depends on building and maintaining regular and effective collaboration with them.

It’s important not to assume that everyone is familiar with what a business analyst does or what your responsibilities cover.

In fact, I often find that when I tell people I’m a business analyst, the response is usually, “Cool! That sounds interesting! What exactly do you do?”

To avoid confusion, set clear expectations and establish a solid foundation for effective collaboration by covering these areas:

  • Clearly explain what you will be doing.

  • Outline the results they can expect from your work.

  • Specify the type of communication and cooperation you’ll need from them.

  • Clarify the types of questions or problems you can assist with.
