Requirements Validation vs. Requirements Verification

According to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK Guide), both requirements validation and requirements verification are critical business analysis activities, but they are not the same.

What’s the difference?

Requirements verification ensures that documented requirements and designs meet quality standards and are fit for purpose.

In simpler terms, a business analyst must be familiar with the organization’s quality standards, follow the appropriate naming conventions, terminology, and models, and ensure that requirements are suitable for stakeholders who will use them.

You might even use a checklist to confirm the requirements are complete, accurate, and of high quality.

On the other hand, requirements validation ensures that documented requirements align with business needs and support the desired outcomes.

This means every requirement must contribute to the overall goals of the solution, ensuring it drives value for the organization.
