Knowledge Area 5, as outlined in the BABOK guide, is known as Requirements Analysis and Design Definition, and it focuses on the tasks that business analysts perform to structure, organize, and model requirements and designs. It also involves validating and verifying business analysis information, as well as identifying solution options that deliver the most value to the enterprise.

This knowledge area includes six tasks:

  • Specify and Model Requirements

  • Verify Requirements

  • Validate Requirements

  • Define Requirements Architecture

  • Define Solution Options

  • Analyze Potential Value and Recommend Solution

These tasks are highly interactive and incremental, spanning the entire business analysis lifecycle—from the initial investigation of enterprise needs to the implementation of the chosen solution.
