Do Nothing: Sometimes the Best Option

As someone performing business analysis activities, you are responsible for analyzing the current state, defining needs, and recommending solutions that deliver value.

In some situations, business analysts can propose several options to key stakeholders, such as:

  • Creating a custom-built solution from scratch

  • Modifying and improving an existing solution

  • Purchasing an off-the-shelf solution

  • etc.

However, it's important to remember that depending on the current state, risks, and potential impact, "do nothing" can also be a valid recommendation. This doesn't mean that the business analysis activities have failed. Instead, it means that the analysis has shown that the most valuable option for now is to "do nothing."

Treat "do nothing" as a legitimate strategic option. It allows you to avoid unnecessary risks and costs when no other option currently adds significant value. Remember, this decision should be continuously monitored until the current state or environment changes and another option becomes more valuable.
