Business Analysis Perspectives: Business Analysts, Like Actors, Should Play Different Roles

Just as actors take on various roles, business analysts must adopt different perspectives depending on the context of their work.

Business analysis can be performed from a range of perspectives, such as business architecture, business process management, and information technology, among others.

A perspective is the ability to view an initiative or change in its proper context and relation to other elements. Business analysts must be capable of seeing their work from multiple viewpoints. For instance, implementing a new software solution might impact existing business processes, enterprise architecture, and even regulatory compliance.

When working on any initiative, project, or change, it's essential to:

  1. Recognize the relevant perspectives that apply to the situation.

  2. Ensure stakeholders are aware of these perspectives to address potential ripple effects—such as how changes to business processes might impact the entire organization or its compliance requirements.

Just like skilled actors who can easily switch between characters, business analysts should move between perspectives to maximize value. The ability to balance a detailed focus with a holistic, system-wide view results in better solutions and more valuable outcomes.
