Business Analysis Best Practices: Real Needs or Expressed Desires?

It is crucial for business analysts to recognize that the key thing we are delivering is rooted in defining the most suitable solutions that deliver the most value.

This sounds simple, but there are 3 important factors to consider:

◾ To find a solution, you must first thoroughly understand the need. You cannot start working on a solution until the need is discovered, analyzed, synthesized, and clearly understood.

◾Sometimes, clients may express desires instead of real needs. Business analysts should be skilled in asking the right questions to uncover those real needs.

◾There may be situations where a customer proposes a presumed solution. While this can be a good starting point, it’s crucial not to focus solely on this expressed solution. Instead, invest time in analyzing the underlying needs, problems, or opportunities that motivated the client to propose this solution.

Being able to differentiate between real needs and expressed desires, and thoroughly analyzing the underlying motivations, will help you deliver valuable solutions.
